As has been typical in recessions for the last 30 years, women's occupations tend to be less recession-sensitive than men's. So in the '70s, when women were starting to enter the workforce en masse, the cries of "They're taking away men's jobs!" subsided during the downturns, as people realized her "second" income was now keeping the family afloat. Still, up until now women, though 51% of the population, have averaged about 46% of the workforce. If they do become the majority, as suggested by this NYT article, that will be a monumental shift. Women have earned most (58%) college degrees for over 20 years. When business recovers, economists say there will be far too few college educated employees to fill the number of jobs needed for growth. Companies who want to take part in the recovery need to start now to learn how to market their careers and companies to women!

There still is a disconnect in male acceptance. The second income that supplements the family doesn't erase the perception that women take jobs away from men. Often those jobs are part time or in traditionally female roles. As women reach the majority of the workforce, we still have a crisis at the top. How can leadership be redefined not to repel women? What kinds of changes can be made in the business landscape to better humanize? There are new opportunities if women choose to discover them.

Overall women make up 83% of all consumer purchases and they want to buy from people who understand their needs and taste. This is a perfect time for women who want to start their own business. The purchasing power of women will propel them into leadership roles.

I have always viewed the bulk of online consumer marketing as marketing to women! Women make the majority of family buying decisions. Also, most men will defer to the preferences of the women in their life to make her happy. My strategy has always been to market to women first and the men will follow! You can see this sound, successful strategy in my web design work at http://newark1.com
