The New Retirement -- Part Time in PrimeTimeTM

Monday, March 5th, 2007 at 10:27 AM

There is an article on the front page of today's Chicago Tribune business section predicting that the coming wave of retiring Baby Boomers is going to drain the labor pool. And, although that may sound dire, study after study (AARP, my proprietary 50-50-50 Panel and the National Center on Women and Aging) all indicate that PrimeTime WomenTM want to continue working.  Income is but one motivator; intellectual stimulation and social interaction are key as well.

So why the headlines?  Because it is not business as usual. While PrimeTimersTM want to keep on working, they are not all looking for traditional 40 hour work weeks.  They are seeking flexible schedules that allow them to pursue other interests and fulfill other obligations.  Companies looking to retain, and perhaps, recruit women with knowledge and experience are going to have to start offering more part-time and job-sharing opportunities.  And guess what?  This is like Marketing to Women.  These same strategies are going to make your firm more appealing to men as well!

What does this mean for you?  If you are an employer, start a self audit to see how, and I don't mean if, this trend is going to impact your business.  It's never too soon to start planning.  And, while you are gathering information, don't just look at facts and figures -- talk to your current employees.  After all, they are the valuable asset you are hoping to retain!  And, there is a Marketing to Women lesson here as well.  Get women talking and you will get invaluable observations, insights and opinions.

If it turns out that a change of course is in order, and more part-time and job-sharing opportunities are on the horizon for your firm, rejoice!  These PrimeTimeTM employees are educated, experienced and motivated to succeed.
